Where would you recommend i.e. resorts and accommodation, that are reasonable but not tacky. Want somewhere to relax in nice surroundings but with some interesting things to see and do. A nice beach and good restaurants too please!

Oh - travelling from either Dublin or Belfast.

Gran Canaria is my choice and if you are looking for the best of both worlds the resort of Maspalomas.Hotels and apartment's in all the Canary Islands in my experience are all of a very good quality. The beaches around Maspalomas range from the sand dunes featured in many films to the level beach as you approach Playa des Ingles.(A word of warning if you are of a nervous disposition beware the dunes as they contain any number of nudists mainly male and rarely under fifty, unless they are gay)By night Maspalomas as any number of good eating places but not the night life of its neighbour Playa des Ingles which is only a short ride away by bus or taxi, here you can experience all life itself from the gay scene of the Jumbo Centre to a large Irish Centre, ideal if you have no desire to sleep.

Tenerife is lovely - I have a friend who lives there and so visit every so often.

The resorts in the south are definitely on the tacky side (Playa de Las Americas and San Cristiano). It is also the least attractive part of the island.

It is worth hiring a car to explore - places like Mount Teide in the centre, Santa Cruz, Icod, are all worth a visit. There are some lovely beaches - both natural and imported sand and you should have some good weather.

There are always plenty of reasonable restaurants - either go for tapas or you can generally get a good steak, with the local potatoes - papas arrugadas (my favourite sad to say!) with mojo sauce - divine!!

You'll have a great trip - I think Los Gigantes might be worth looking into - west of Playa de las Americas but with stunnnig scenery of the cliff face there or a resort in the North but I can't remember it's name properly, maybe Puerto Nuevo which is really nice too.

Have fun!

Tenerife. Costa Adeje. Hotel Rui Adeje. Great location, just outside Las Americas. Self catering or half/ full board. 15 mins from airport. Check it out on www.tripadvisor.com. We were there last year and loved it. Very secure, big pool area, free sunbed, mattress and clean towel every day. Tenerife still a bargain and tax free. 10 mins down to sandy beach, great restaurants at the beach. Loads of variety and choice, well priced. Booze dead cheap.
