An educated answer:
The word pornography originally meant postitution. The stigma that is attributed to pornography comes from that connection and the thought that prostitution cheapens relationships such as marriage. Like they say, why buy the cow when you get the milk for free or in this case for a dollar at your local video store?
As for your wife she is wrong. It is not porn in that these people are not getting paid to have sex on camera. They are on camera because they want their lifestyle documented. Real Sex is a documentary. All people on the show have to sign a release and if they get paid it is for what the content or their discussion and not for the fact that they are having sex.
The test for whether a work is a work of pornography is whether it has a message other than sex that can be deemed as educational or artistic in value. That is vague but that is the way it is. Basically, communities get to decide what is and what is not pornography. As Judge Blackmon put it "I don't know what it is but I know it when I see it."
I have seen it and i have seen the show Real Sex and they are nothing alike.
Of course if your wife has a problem watching the show then you should be asking yourself, what is it that you want out of the show that she does not? The show has a lot to do with sexual exploration and she may be trying to tell you that she is not interested in exploring the subject. You apparently are and that is making her uncomfortable.
Perhaps you need to think about this on your own and let the subject die.
At any rate it is not porn, though it did cover a porn convention on one episode. It is also not X rated. No genital contact is filmed.

Porn is in the eye of the beholder, not some government or religious authority figure.

Its pretty darn close to soft porn. But I have to agree that it tends to be more educational about what other people do.
