annies attic has a club for girls called the creative girls club. they will set the stuff in the mail and directions and all that. but its not free. for free patterns try pattern central. then look for begginer patterns. there are videos also at http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?_adv_prop=video&va=crochet+tutorial&fr=slv8-msgr&ei=UTF-8

There is http://knittinghelp.com with free video's. I also recomend loom knitting it's easy, fun and you see results right away (a baby hat only takes a few hours to make).
