The effect of warmer equatorial waters is at the heart of the El Nino weather phenomena. Normally the trade winds flowing east to west prevent the warmer waters of the western pacific from moving east. When these trade winds are reduced, warmer water moves east ward and the result is that the jet stream over the North Pacific Ocean is invigorated and pulled farther south than normal, where it collects moisture and storms and carries them to the western United States and northern Mexico. This change in the upper air flow causes a completely different result on the east coast of the US with warmer temperatures and greater precipitation than normal. This is precisely what we are observing at this time in the winter of 2007 along the east coast and along the Pacific coast. This is a very simplified answer but I believe it contains the essense of what you are looking for.

The Gulf stream is a giant heat conveyor belt, taking cold water from the deep sea and bringing it to the top, where it heats up, and is taken back down. As it moves, it takes cold air from the south pole to the equater, and warm air from the equator to the north pole.

When the air near the equator gets heated, it rises and the air pressure drops. The air in the surrounding region starts to fill the void. This causes wind currents and eventually weather systems
