I was driving someone elses car (i dont have one) and I got into a car accident. the cost for repair will be $1499 she asked me how much i thought was fair for me to pay. The reason they didnt report it to insurance is they didnt want their insurance to go up, but being it was their choice to not added me to their insurance, and also not to have insurance pay for the damages, wouldnt it be most fair if I paid whatever their dedutible would have been if if they had reported it?

Also I am a nanny for this family, and i drive their car on a regular basis, and I do live with them.

i think it would depend on the reason you were driving the car...if you were driving for your job then i dont think you should pay anything..if you were driving for a personal matter i think paying the deductable would be fair...they should add you onto the insurance if you drive the car regularly...also..some companies will cover you even if you're not on the insurance..as long as you had the owners permission to drive the car

If you drive their car as a part of your job, they should have added you to the policy. This is why they didn't want to report it to the insurance company.

Technically, they are on the hook for the repairs, unless they can prove in court that you were grossly negligent. However, how much do you like your job? Like it or not, if the two of you cannot come to an agreement that satisfies both of you, either you will be fired soon, or will quit.

If you do change situations, make sure your new employer adds you to their insurance, or gives you something in writing saying that they will not hold you liable in case of an accident.

They had you drive their car knowing that you could get into an accident, but they wouldn't call their insurance when it occurs? What's an insurance for? This must be in the US..... US Americans are really unique when it comes to this logic. Now if it was only for let's say $200.... then it's understandable, but $1400??? You don't owe them anything. Show them the answers here and ask them what they think. Start looking for a new place to work, if they force you to pay. ... and they better get your name on their insurance. They should learn from this incident.....

Considering you drive their car frequently, and reside in their home, you really need to be on their insurance. Thankfully no one was hurt in this accident (I assume), but that is exactly why you need to be insured in the future. As a nanny, there's a good chance your employers' children would be in the car with you, and they need to be safe as well. However, offering to just pay the deductible isn't exactly fair in my opinion. Yes, it's partly their fault for not including you on their insurance in advance. But you also agreed to drive their car uninsured, on a regular basis as you mentioned. One could argue that since you were behind the wheel, any expenses incurred would be yours to pay. But given that this is your employer, they should have taken precautions in case of an accident. I think paying half would be fair, as you were responsible for the accident, but you should really consider talking to your employer about getting you on that insurance. If it's that big a deal, maybe you could pay whatever the difference is between their current premium and the cost after having you insured.

You are in a rather precarious situation here.
First, as a live-in employee, you should be covered by their insurance. Second, an accident this expensive should have been claimed.

It seems reasonable for you to pay the deductible, be it $100 or $500. It sounds like this is a good time for you and your employers to evaluate your position in the house, and take steps to prevent any more situations like this one. Chalk it up to live and learn.

seriously, if you are a nanny and are carrying the families children in their car they shouldve put you on their insurance and paid for it, if you can get another job then leave because if they wont insure you they are putting your life and others at risk. do you really want to work for people like this?

When you get behind the wheel you are excepting responsibility. If there insurance does not cover you, you should refuse to drive. If they insist, then they should pay for all of it.

Yeap. Offer to pay the deductible or tell them to call the insurance company. That is what insurance is FOR in the first place!

No. You had the accident. It is your responsibility to pay for it.
