The reason you are getting shocked is that as you slide your buttocks accross the seat it builds up static electricity. Hold on to the metal part of the door as you slide out and the door will take the static from you and you will not have this problem again.

Yes, a spark can ignite the gas fumes, so try to touch metal on the door as you get out, to ground yourself. Do you have anything nylon in your car, like seat covers installed? Do you wear clothing that can cause sparks, like nylon jacket or something? I don't know if those wool sheep type of seat covers will do that. Do a google search for how static electricity is caused, and see if you are doing anything to cause it. A small spark may not seem like much, but under the right conditions, like around the gas tank of your car, where the gas fumes are coming out, it can cause a fire. Or worse, an explosion. check out your situation and get it fixed. Until then, always touch the metal of the car, before you get out and as you get out, to ground the electriciy.

Spray your seats with Static Guard once a week. If you don't care for the smell of Static Guard, mix a half-capful of liquid fabric softener in a quart spray bottle w/water, and spritz seats once a week.

That happens to me all the time too! The anti-static spray is a great idea. But in the meantime, what I do is touch the door with my right elbow and it isn't nearly as bad as when you touch the door with your hand.

Get some anti-static spray. Sold in grocery stores, also office supply stores. This is less of a problem in damp weather. You'll appreciate those seats in hot weather, they don't get hot when the car is parked, and you won't stick to them if you wear shorts.

Hold onto the metal of your key when getting out. Touch the key to the metal of the vehicle, this way the electricity is disipated thru the key instead of your finger.
