A flash drive uses memory chips sort of like those in your computer except they don't lose what's stored in them when you turn off the power.

An external hard drive uses the same kind of magnetic hard drive that you have in your computer.

Flash drives are small, convenient, easy to use, easy to lose, and extremely expensive over about 2gb.

External hard drives are larger than flash drives (although they can be pretty small - about iPod or flip phone size) and cheaper per gigabyte than flash drives.

External hard drives can either be powered through the USB cable (which may require plugging it directly to the computer rather than running though a hub) or though a regular power cable. Generally, the bigger drives use a power cable. This will limit portability but the trade-off is massive (terabyte) storage.

From your limited description I would check out a brand name 60gb external hard drive powered through the USB cable. NewEgg carries several for about $70.

From the point of view of your OS the flash drive is the same as the external hard drive. They all use the USB port I think. The difference is in the hardware: the external hard drive is a normal hard drive with added hardware to transform the data connection between the hard drive and motherboard to a USB interface. The flash drive is a special memory memory chip.
The other difference is the capacity: the biggest flash drive actually must be around 7 GB and I don't think its easily available while Hard rives go up to 700 GB.
You could also get a transformation kit that would transform any inetrnal IDE drive into an external drive.

An external hard drive is the main memory for your system. It is a solid disk which stores data in tracks, a sensor spins rounds to read it. A usb drive plugs into the computer and tends to store in flash, also much smaller than a harddrive

Umm this is kinda tough... I have both. my flash is a 1gig and my external is a 60 gig. i paid about $100 for the external drive while the 1 gig flash i paid about $20 for. its just a matter of space that you need. if its a lot of stuff you can check out Circuit City or Best Buy for the best deals. You can find cheap deals on both.

An external hard drive is like the hard drive in your computer....a spinning disk........a flash drive has no moving parts..........something like oh, the RAM in your computer. I use a flash drive mostly to move files from computer to computer but I have friends that use them for storing pictures and data and they seem to be happy with them.

If you can get a flash drive big enough to hold your data than it will be fine. They are really just 2 different ways to store data.
