Thank you for asking a great question!
Actually, its a combination of learning proper logic and language/writing skills. One of the key things any graduate should be able to do is express themselves with intelligence and dignity.
I can't tell you how many top management people can't spell, write a paragraph, or use proper logic.
These two skills should be better incorporated in high school composition.
And, I'm going to keep harping on how sex is taught in the Netherlands. They obviously have a handle on it, as our teen pregnancy rate is 7X theirs.
If you want "reality based" education, that would be a damned good place to start.

I'm within the eighth Grade and we're nonetheless speaking approximately nouns and verbs. Sad, is not? The university I pass to shall we someone in. You would be a crackhead, pregnant with five children, they are going to nonetheless will let you in. On Friday, my magnificence simply had a celebration with prime schoolers and eighth Grade giving every different lap dances. The trainer used to be proper there, telling them to give up and that is it. It's unhappy how I watch my friends act out. It's unhappy how lecturers right here simply instruct you simply the fundamental stuff. My magnificence remains to be speaking approximately topics and predicates! We did not get to Adjectives or Double Negatives! Yet they marvel once we write experiences, why we fail? We are going to fail since you simply instruct the identical stuff time and again! I could love to study extra complex matters and matters so they can study within the subsequent grade. I'm lovely definite whilst I get to prime university, they would possibly not be speaking approximately verbs and topics. They will by and large be on anything else and I do not have a clue what they're speaking approximately since a few trainer simply teaches the fundamental stuff! If I desired to study the fundamental stuff once more, I could be again in 4th or fifth Grade! I feel public faculties, normally, relies on the university, its atmosphere, and pupils. If I pass to a university in which there's a taking pictures each week within the atmosphere, you already understand how the university will surely be. If I pass to a university in which it is only a quiet vicinity, then you definately surely understand how the university will likely be.

Critical thinking skills were definitely taught in my school.
I would teach Middle Eastern or Asian history. We have U.S. and European history, but with the Middle East and Asia becoming world players now (for good or bad) we need to understand their history.
Second choice - I would say philosophy or ethics.

It would be nice if they taught how the different branches of government work. They don't do that anymore and it shows by all the idiotic questions and answers we see on here 24/7.

politics, history and overview of world religion, philosophy, world history (unedited).
Most of the people exiting high school could not name a Muslim nation other than Iraq.
Most people think that there are liberals and conservatives and that's it. And they are Democrats and Republicans. One or the other, black and white.
Most of them don't understand Stalin and Mao killed as many people as Hitler.
Most of them don't understand that 5-6 billion people across the world believe in a higher power.
None of them know what philosophy is.

i agree, but they stifle and punish independent thought.
they need to get back to a curriculum of teaching more than how to pass a proficiency test to allow schools more money. some schools do not even have american history anymore. sadly parents are too busy fighting over the POA,prayer and sex ed.

What we don't learn is the actual truth of many things. We only hear the teacher's opions not the actual facts.

Thinking outside of your bum. Like their parents, many children are lost when it comes to thinking about something other than what is immediately in their area. Why should they care about what is going on in Iraq? Why should they care about death and poverty in Africa? Why should I care if the Bush Administration is destroying my country? All these questions are moot as long as they have food in their tummies and their parents are struggling to pay for them to have a new car to drive each night and hang with their posse.
