Goth is one thing, but cutting is something else. Glad your brother is in counseling. Kids say lots of things are "common" and "everyone does it" until they believe it, but it's not necessarily true. I hope what you're describing isn't all that "common." I haven't heard of it here in the South West. Sounds like some group counseling is in order. What's going on in these kids lives? Definitely a lack of love and affection, especially the physical kind. Don't parents hug their kids anymore? All they need to do is ask permission. No teenager will turn you down if you ask first, believe it or not.
Just the other night on "Cold Case" they had a story about a high school "fight club" where children of control freaks bare-knuckled each other to feel "real." Their problems started in their families, though some emotional disturbances seem to come from no where. Something is likely going on in your brother's life that he can't deal with--the counseling probably will help, in time.
And contrary to popular belief, kids don't act out "just to get attention." They almost always NEED the attention and don't know any other way to get it. My neighbor's boy shoplifted because his dad never paid any attention to him except when he was beating him.
Prayers and best wishes, my friend. I hope things are better for your family soon.

high school is when the journey of self-discovery is at its highest peak, most intense and bumpy.as an adult or older person you may not uderstand why kids nowdays do such things and follow such ridiculous trends, but look under the surface and try to understand these children instead of trying to judge or correct them-the reality is high school's a tough place for most (unless you're good-looking or popular-i don't mean to oversimplify, but those are the basics) and some of them cope with the peer pressure and growing up phase by rebelling, showing aggression and arrogance-emo phase may be one of those things kids do just so they're not normal, because to them normal is a derogatory phrase that directly links to conformity.
so yeah, kids may look stupid,do stupid things, but they have their solid reasons and don't worry about your brother, like most of us he'll grow up a fine man and look back laughing-but a little emotional support would be helpful.

It's the new version of Goth. Obviously your brother has some issues, but his style is not the problem. Everyone is NOT cutting themselves, no matter what he says. He may be feeling alone, or numb and cutting himself is a rush of adrenaline, it's a way for him to get some stimulus. Don't blame this on the Emo trend, he needs more than that. Attention, activities, and responsibilities.

Music today is particularly influenced by this "emo" phase as well through the style of music, the lyrics and the clothing style the artists wear.

Kids have a need to feel like they are apart of something. If you want kids to be a part of something safe and healthy then you have to find a way to make it cool and popular. When I was a kid we though slam dancing and punk was cool. Now I would never admit to any of my current friends that I did any of that stuff. Unless you lock them up and home school you can't prevent them from joining these groups. I keep my kids busy with sports so they don't have time for these fads ... plus their team mates would laugh at them if they did that kind of stuff. Hope this helps.

its not that the cutting is cool. it is that it make him fit in...emo = emotion. there is too much emotion and drama is high schools now it is crazy. he will get over it eventually, but for now u and your family just got to comfort him and deal with it. as harsh as it seems sorry but its the truth.

Its kinda like "Apple Jacks" Why do kids like them, and they do not taste like apples!
But seriously this is nothing new. Everyone wants to be part of something, and no one wants to be an island and lonely, even if they claim they are tying to be an individual, Personally i see it as no different then anyone under the age of 35 who smokes. You knew it was bad for you before took that first puff, but you CHOSE to do it to be accepted.
