Hi all you comp boffins out there. We have a problem with my other halfs laptop...basically the ethernet won't work on his laptop, but its fine on mine. We have the top grade package with wireless & he has tried my lappy through all 4 ports & the modem is fine. We have an idea it maybe something happened to his laptop, although its not been dropped or anything done to damage it. Any idea's ?

Check it he's got a firewall enabled, that would stop internet access, also try
START-RUN-type ping 127.0.0.1 and see if it can see the network card. If you have a router see if mac address filtering is enabled. If his computer isn't in the list it won't work

It could be switched off....check your BIOs during start-up
Hit F2
and check through the options (NIC) to see if its Enabled/Disabled
You could also check.....Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services
make sure these Services are On
Network Connections
Routing and Remore Access
Also
Hit CTRL/ALT...and then DEL...go to Networking and see what the 'State' says..it should say 'Operational'
hope that helps

My in-laws had this problem and they fixed it by reinstalling Windows on the errant laptop. Evidently something corrupted the network driver but simply reinstalling that driver did not work, so they blew the system away and reinstalled. Works like a champ now!

Was it working before? Have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the laptop? They do sell patches for this type of problem.....my suggestion is to contact the manfuacturer and see if this type of problem has been reported or if they have a remedy.

maybe he hasn't got the drivers installed for his ethernet card, or it is disabled, look in device manager and see what status, if any, it has. failing that, why not use the wireless, get a wireless pcmcia card if he doesn't have it built on-board
