use white vinegar in the water compartment..set to highest heat... hold iron over a sink and let steam...also use any burst of steam settings you may have.. then always use DISTILLED water in your iron.. you can buy it at the grocery store for around a dollar a gallon . You should heat the iron with the distilled water the same way again before you use the iron on clothes.

Faultless makes an iron cleaner to get the residue off the bottom. It's sold in the laundry section near the detergents or near the irons and ironing boards. Just follow the package directions. It really works. Don't use anything abrasive on the bottom of your iron.
For the inside use vinegar and distilled water as previously suggested.

Clean out the inside by running some vinegar and water through it. you can also use some baking soda as a scouring agent to work on stains on the bottom of the iron.

White vinegar in the water compartment. Heat to 'wool' setting, place where steam vents are pointing down and allow all vinegar to steam out. Repeat with water.

Run a mix of white vinegar and water through the inside and clean the outside with one of those Mr Clean eraser pads.
