You just need to grab a sample of the water from the area where the protists of interest might be concentrated.
Grab some water from an area that appears to have no water currents, and has a bit of decaying vegetation, getting a bit of the bottom ooze too. That'll get you some of the interesting swimming ciliates.
To get things like vorticella and stentor, look for a slender stick or decaying leaf. Add that to your collection. This might also get you some of the surface crawlers like ameba.

Two common ways to catch small critters: (1) grab sample using a jar or bottle; and (2) tow sample by pulling a net with very fine mesh (material similar to nylon stockings).

Try a light at night. It can attract some interesting protists and daphnia

Try getting a sample of water that has been there for a very long time.
