It is called day-dreaming. You can't be awake while night dreaming because you must be in REM state.

i think that's kind of a contradiction...unless you're day dreaming, but if you find a way to do it let us know. in the meantime, there are methods to remember your dreams better, like waking yourself up on a certain schedule, and jotting down your dreams immediately in a journal you keep close to the bed.

lucid dreaming is still not the same as being "awake" in your dream, if you ask me.

all i can tell you is what sigmund freud used to do to self examine his dreams when he was writing "interpretation of dreams"-he wd set his alarms to go on every hour. he wd then document the dream he was having, every time the alarms rang (in half sleepy state, i assume). that way he was concious about the contents of his dreams. he wd remember the vast majority of his dreams. (normally i believe we forget more than 98% of them within one hour of waking).you can also adjust the time gap between the alarms (or beeps preferably:->) according to the sleep wave cycle so that it approximately coincides with the end of every REM phase.

It's called "lucid dreaming" you actually manipulate the dream.
