For me, Stupendous Man - makes me laugh so hard I almost cry because when I was a kid, that was me.

I’m not sure this one was ever given a name, but when Calvin would put on dark glasses and dance uninhibitedly (for a change) with Hobbes, jumping on the bed, etc. Then there were also the multiple Calvins which he made with the duplicator (see another recent question about which cardboard-box invention of Calvin’s was the coolest—oh, that’s yours. Never mind.)

I really loved both Spiff and Stupendous Man. My all time favorite… I give Spiff a slight edge, but it was the multiple Calvins.

[Do you remember then one where Calvin is reading a comic and the Batman-like figure is fighting with the ‘foolish amazon’ and she blasts his spine out….?

“It hurt. A lot.”]

Anyhow, that seems to me to be the crux of Calvin’s problems, beginning with the torments of Moe the bully at school, and eventually resulting in a full blown case of Multiple Personality Disorder, with Hobbes, Spiff, Stupendous Man, the multiple Calvins, etc. Even Hobbes recognized Calvin’s inner conflicts, teasing him about the valentines that Calvin himself (as Hobbes) had sent to Suzie!

All I can say is, no wonder Bill Watterson didn’t want the memory of his miserable childhood commercialized. That has to be why he refused to license his characters out for merchandise, and I only hope that he got enough relief from C&H or that he was able to find a therapist who could help him. I pray that he has a good life from now on.

God Bless you, Bill Watterson, wherever you are. Your courage in showing the pain you went through, and the struggles you faced in trying to become one whole person instead of separate personality fragments has not only entertained a lot of other kids. You may also have saved some lives from suffering as you have.

they're so cool that on the day the final comedian ran interior the paper the place I stay. I purely sat there for a protracted, long term crammed with a extensive unhappiness that my 2 friends weren't going to be in print anymore.
