Must I find an Agent? How do I send it to the publishers? What is a reasonable royalty to accept if I assume the book will list for $20 as a hard cover?

Make sure it's proof read, and properly edited before you do anything. Once that's done, attach a brief one page letter with a synopsis of the book and a little about yourself, then send the letter off and the first 2/3 sample chapters of your novel to as many agents and publishers as you can find in the Writers' Market.
Don't forget to remember me when you get famous.

HA. You have much to learn, grasshopper.

If all you want is to say you have a book published, then by all means go vanity-- lulu.com is a decent one.

Wanting to be published is easy to say. Getting published is VERY hard. You'll work for years to do it, even if you're really good.

You need an agent for the major publishers, yes. Most do not take unagented subs.

And just so you know-- hardcover is considered "upmarket" and RARELY done for debut authors.

You also need to weight the advance vs. the royalty rate. Royalties are generally 6-8% depending on if its mass market, trade, hardback, etc.

that's confusing to get revealed. maximum companies purely settle for books submitted with tips from brokers, and it is confusing to get an agent. whilst they take unsolicited manuscripts, normally purely one individual reads it (an intern of a few sort each and every so often) and in the event that they do no longer think of that's totally super and could make an excellent sort of money, they gained't bypass it directly to the real people who positioned up. you spot celebrities positioned up SUCKY books because of the fact their call will sell it; you have the final e book ever yet no one is familiar with you so they gained't today purchase your e book. It costs plenty to marketplace a e book and carry it contained available for purchase or in spite of, so the publishing companies do no longer take possibilities on new expertise normally, yet Stephen King ought to write a e book of undesirable jokes and it might sell. J.ok Rowling have been given became down various circumstances for Harry potter, and look how effective those books are. it is a superb sort of success and timing and good success to you! Oh or you could self positioned up yet those books are no longer taken "heavily" and that they are called arrogance press.
