Maybe it didn't matter that your question was covered with coarse, stiff hairs- they wanted to help anyway. :P Most likely, people being what we are, the person(s) ignored the word they didn't know and tried to feel smart by answering the question. I myself had to look it up, but can admit it without shame. Happy are the meek, teachable people! ;)

Chances are that they either felt the meaning of the word "hirsute" irrelevant to the answer, or that they made a guess at what the word meant from the context it was used in. For example, "The hirsute man had to shave three times a day."
