I moved to Philly and informed my work. They said they filed it but it was somehow rejected most likely because they did it wrong. So I have lived in Philly without paying city wages tax for a year!! I am freaking out because I am going to owe them thousand of dollars!!! I just ask my work what to do, who to call and they just shrugged!!!! They don't know!!! Does anyone have any clue, where I should start getting this mess straighten out??

You probably have to file an annual return with Philly - you do in Pittsburgh. If it had been taken out properly, would be just a formality, since you'd be even with the city.

Check the city website for information and for the required form, and go ahead and file this year's return, and pay what you owe for 2006 if you can. If you can't, enclose a note with your return asking for them to set up a payment plan.

It's what, 4% or 5% or something like that? Ugly. Did your work refund to you whatever they supposedly took out at first?

I'm in PA too, and my work never took out wage taxes because they didn't have a facility in the area where I live. I had to pay it myself each year - was supposed to file quarterly, but never did. But mine was only 1% because I wasn't in Pgh or Philly, which have higher rates.

You could call somebody at the city wage tax dept and ask them what to do, but might not get much help beyond "file, and pay it yourself".

Good luck.

Does the city really charge THOUSANDS of dollars on city income tax? WOW! Remind me to never move to Philly! I doubt that it will really cost you thousands... If you knew there was a tax (it sounds like you knew about the tax AND you have already calculated that it will cost you thousands of dollars) and your employer never took the tax out, it is still YOUR responsibility to save the money in the bank for tax time. btw, WHY DO people ALWAYS say "my work" when they really mean their employer or their boss or their job? The word "work" is defined and examples of it's use are found here:
Rest assured, I am pretty sure we are talking about less than a couple hundred dollars here.

Check the City's web site and make sure that you are subject to the tax if the money is earned outside the city. I am not from there but most cities only tax money earned in that city.

Just take it to the place you get your taxes done and they can take care of it for this year but you best get that changed as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, even though it was their mistake, the money is still owed. You need to make sure you are checking your paycheck stubs to see if the amounts are correct. That is your responsibility.
