Because the ash from a volcano makes the slopes and surrounding area incredibly fertile, so crop growing there is a breeze. People live there for the farming.

Often they have no choice owing to the nature of their financial situation, so they take the risk into account, also they have no other homes to go to.

Although people know the dangers associated with living near volcanoes, the continue to live near volcanoes because they feel that the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. Most volcanoes don't erupt for a long period and local people can often predict that a volcano is going to erupt. The lava that comes out of the volcano contains a lot of minerals like copper, zinc, gold, silver e.t.c which is useful to industries and also makes the soil fertile and appropriate for agriculture. Geothermal energy is harnessed too. There is a lot of tourism in these areas as volcanoes attract millions of tourists every year ,for different reasons. Tourism creates jobs in shops, hotels restaurants, tourist centers and national parks. Some people also cannot afford to shift their homes.

Thank you, I hope I have answered your question.

Many people dont have a choice, they are born there and were raised there. They are used to living near the volcano, and it is just a part of their everyday life that they accept, infact it is home to them, would you leave your hometown to get away from something that may not even happen in your lifetime? People who live near them also might not have the financial capability to move to another town. Also, major volcano explosions do not happen often (from one volcano), so this is basically like asking, why do people live in florida? or the carribbean? when there are possibilities that during the summer they may be hit by a hurricane. Same with places that are affected with tornadoes and floods often. Many volcanoes are not even active, most are dormant or completely inactive (dead). The land around volcanoes is very fertile, this means that growing crops and food is quite easy, so these areas are perfect for farming. There are also many natural springs around volcanoes, and wildlife, therefore may be a nice place to live around?

Baleigha is right. Many communities have existed and farmed the land, and when near a coast haved fished for generations, in the shadows of volcanoes. We may think of them as more primitive cultures, but they are the survivors through the centuries.

We may ask why people still live in Washington, Oregon and California. Our nature keeps us in denial, and we think a disaster cannot happed to us. So, life goes on.

Originally, early man would have seen it as god like and used it to offer sacrifices, who wouldn't want to live near a god? Also, it offered good hot water springs and ash is an excellent fertiliser, so years after eruption the land must have looked quite good. I am unsure why people build there in modern times, as surely that one day you become totalled by a volcano outweighs any benefits. If it came whilst you were sleeping, there's no way you could ensure you would get out. I think it's rather like loyalty to your home town, perhaps if you're born there, you'd stay there. Rather like us in the UK, we pretty much know that one day, we'll be sunk, but we stay here anyway!
