Because from an evolutionary viewpoint eyes are a great advantage. The first proto-eyes, that allowed the creature to distinguish between light and dark, were useful. More advanced eyes have proven to be a greater and greater advantage. As soon as one predator species developed eyes, any prey without would likely be de-selected, while those with would have a chance of surviving.

if it were any of the shapes with corners or even irregular than it would tear off the protective layer of the eye
