My twins are 14 and I am pregnant again and due in 2 weeks. I got the bedding set and I remember having crib bumpers before....but for the life of me I can not remember why???????? They seem like they would be dangerous - even if tied down properly. What if the baby rolled under there and got thier head stuck? How long do you use them for?
It sounds crazy but I can't remember.

I have them in my crib (daughter is 2 1/2 months) to help keep drafts and light out. Now that my daughter is older, she looks at them (they are care bears) and it entertains her. I also have 2 cats and this helps keep their interest away from the crib as they can't see what is in it (the baby).

Because I know they are a safety hazard with choking, as soon as my daughter starts rolling around and moving, they will be coming out.

It's suggested not to use bumpers anymore. Because of the risk of SIDS and the fact that so much is unknown about what causes SIDS.

If when your baby is moving around the crib and they get hands and legs stuck through slots you can buy what's called a breathable bumper. I think you can find them at baby's R US and Amazon.com

It's a mesh that's breathable, but will help babies not get hands and legs stuck in slats.

I used my bumpers, just making sure her arms stay in the crib.
Though with new cribs these days the bars between have more spaces. So you may not want to use bumpers.

I like to use them until the baby starts moving around because they help create a cozier environment and they block drafts that would otherwise come through the crib bars.

They can be dangerous as far as suffocation purposes but not SIDS. SIDS has nothing to do with bumper pads because SIDS and suffocation are two different things. SIDS is a baby that dies of unknown causes upon completion of an autopsy and suffocation is just that, suffocation. If a baby suffocates it is not considered a SIDS death. My baby died of SIDS and I have done my research on this subject.
