Here is the way all this works (in most situations):

Customer sends seller a PURCHASE ORDER (not a sales order as many have stated).

Seller enters customer's purchase order information into the accounting system which then generates a SALES ORDER. This is generally an internal document and the Packing Slip is part of it. The packing slip is sent with the goods to the customer. The shipping costs may be written on the sales order, which is then sent back to billing to be converted into an INVOICE. The invoice is then sent to the customer.

Cash memo is the acknowledgment receipt of a sale of products or services sold or offer by the supplier. A Tax invoice details what products/sevices were sold to the customer. When a Tax invoice is paid you will usually raise a Cash Memo or in other courntries this is called a Receipt. Regarding the layout and contents this usually is dependant on your business activities and what you are selling, you can check the net ther are many different formats. Hope this helps.

A sales order is either something you receive or send to someone, placing your order for whatever it is you want to purchase. An invoice is what you send/receive once the order has been fulfilled, it is the formal request for payment from the supplier.
