For violent criminals and child molesters? And i'm not talking about sitting on death row for fifteen years. I'm talking a swift reprisal? Why/why not. And can we refrain from religous stuff because we all know we break God's laws all the time. Why not break them for the good of humanity?

It would seem that if potential criminals knew they'd be dealth with swiftly, they may be less likely to commit a crime.

Yes-no. I don't quite agree on the 'swift' action thing. I'm not usually a violent person, but when it comes to violent and unforgivable crimes I think the death penalty is a good thing. But I don't be live in quick death. I think a slow, painful and torture is the best before death. A quick death is almost too good for them.
Following on the fallen Iraqi leader's death, I think that was just too good. I'm all for slow and painful. I know it sounds bad. But if its in effect criminals-to-be will think twice, Cox you can't get away as with a quick death...

This question is based on something that is not possible because it is human nature to make mistakes. Many people think that DNA is the way to guarantee we have the right person but in most murder cases, DNA is not available. DNA was a factor in very few of the over 120 cases of people on death row being released with evidence of their innocence.
Who gets the death penalty is not a matter of which crimes are the "worst of the worst." (Robert Blecker, a supporter of the death penalty and a professor at the New York School of Law) as said this many times.) Our system does not get the "worst of the worst" and it can execute innocent people.
Other things to consider- the death penalty costs much much more than life without parole. A lot of the extra costs being right after a suspect is arrested, way before the appeals process begins. In my opinion, the extra money should be spent on victims services, which are severely underfunded.
The death penalty is not a deterrent. Most killers do not think they will be caught (if they do any thinking at all). States with the death penalty have higher homicide rates than states that do not. There are better ways to prevent crime. One reason that the murder rate in New York City has gone down is the introduction of more sophisticated policing methods.
The death penalty is very hard on murder victims families. The trial is much more complicated than one without a death penalty possibility, lasts much longer. Life without parole (no picnic, 23 of 24 hours a day locked in a tiny cell, forever) is swift and sure.
None of these things should suggest that people who oppose the death penalty excuse brutal crimes. None of these rests of religious arguments (aside from revulsion I hope you would share if an innocent person were executed, in our name.)
The moral question is best worked out with whatever spiritual source you trust.

I would still be concerned about how it would affect us as a society--does it harden our hearts to kill, even to kill a child molester? I would also prefer that people have time to ponder their crimes and live with the consequences. And that they not be able to commit "suicide by judicial system." or that people could still be wrongly executed by corrupt officials or kangaroo courts, even if it could no longer happen by accident.
That said, though, I think doing away with accidental false convictions would remove my biggest single objection to the death penalty.

If we could be 100% certain of their guilt then definitely yes.I think that would be A deterrent as most of these people are thinking only of their own sick pleasures and satisfaction when committing these crimes losing their lives would deter the self centred evil scum.
