anyone that moves to japan needs a visa, so you would either need a university visa or a work visa. in order to get a work visa, you would need to have a 4 year college degree. so you probably have to wait until you're at least 18 and then get a university visa. that's the only way you can live there. i guess one other thing would be join the US military and ask to be stationed somewhere in japan.

You would most likely have to wait until you're 18 (unless you're moving with a legal guardian or if you are an exchange student). But I suggest that it's better to wait until you're 18, so you can use that time to save money for airfare, local transportation (bullet train), groceries, an apartment, real estate agent fees (those can be VERY expensive). Do as much research as possible, and calculate ALL costs. If you plan on a long-term move, you'll need to secure a job, and a long-term visa, perhaps even citizenship. I think your decision (or even interest) to move to Japan is wonderful. Just make sure you're prepared for such a change. As for where, I recommend Kyoto. Tokyo is the capital, and that's what everyone talks about, but Kyoto is the cultural center of Japan (and it was capital before Tokyo for over 1000 years). Kyoto is also less crowded. Hope this helps!

Well, you might as well say screw it to this idea too, because it is NOT going to happen. 4 year degree and a job offer. Or you have about $125,000 to $250,000 socked away somewhere to pay for school and get a student visa. Do they have any schools that teach any courses in 'Reality' where you are from? Personally I think the market is wide open on that front. Final Answer..... PIPE IDEA.... POP!!! Nope. Try again. @ Mr. Burns..... Nope, doesn't even count as a pipedream, because he is just thinking about it. Just popped into his head this morning. Yep, gonna' take a shower, brush my teeth, maybe buy a new kind of mouthwash at the drugstore and, hell, I'll think about moving to Japan. This crap doesn't even qualify as a pipedream. And you thought it couldn't get any worse! Now we have people waking up in the morning and developing pipe ideas. Trying to pop those can be like chasing a bubble to pop it..... they just spontaneously pop before you can get to them. And can't speak a lick of Japan. I was watching That 70's Show a while back and Red was talking about one of his son's friends. He called him "another 18 year old dumbass".

I think you'd probably have to be an adult for a start... Then you'd need some reason to move to Japan... I'm not sure if they'd let you in simply because you wanted to be there, you'd need a job- the company puts you forward for a working visa, and then you would be able to stay. After a few years of living in Japan without causing any trouble, you might get the chance to apply for permanent residence. Quite a hefty task if all you want to do is be closer to a few friends...

If you don't mind a shorter stay however, a tourist visa will last you for three months. You can stay with your friends in that time, and then go back to live at home- alternatively, if you have the money you can buy a ticket to someplace like Korea- another three months of tourist visa there, and then when you come back to Japan you will have another three months worth of tourist visa... you won't be able to get permanent residency that way, but you can have a slightly longer stay.

Another tactic would be to start a degree in Japanese- one year of study, followed by a trip to Japan. A student visa lasts for about ten months, and it would be a good first experience of the country if you haven't been before.

Good luck!

You would need a visa as a student or to work in Japan for anything other than a holiday.

You would have to wait a few years and do a degree first, but the Japanese government employ lots of people from around the world to teach English to Japanese school pupils. They would organise your visa and flight, and help you find accommodation for when you arrive. You can stay out there for up to three years, or a minimum of one (unless you needed to come home early) and it is a really great experience (I lived out there for two years in Toyama).

I wouldn't recommend going out to Japan, or any other country, by yourself and with no set plan in place.
