Benghazi ww2

I decided, on one of my days off, to go to Benghazi, in the afternoon for a break and then go to the Cinema in the evening.
As we had been warned not to venture out alone at night I made enquiries and was told there would be a lorry in the Car Park, near the Cinema, to pick up personnel and take them back to Camp. So off I went to Benghazi. I had a good ‘shufti’around, treated myself to a few drinks and something to eat then when the time came I went to the Cinema. After the programme I came out to board the Gharry (lorry) for a lift back to Camp.
There were quite a few trucks in the Car Park but none for my Unit - Sod it! I thought to myself, I'll have to leg it so I started walking and with every step I took I cursed the duff gen merchant who told me there would be transport available.
I had walked a couple of hundred yards, maybe less, when I heard a motor coming up behind me I turned and saw headlights, it was pitch black so I could not make out what sort of vehicle it was. Anyway I started thumbing and as the lights came nearer I made out the shape of a native bus. I felt uncomfortable about this but the bus had stopped "What else could I do?" I grudgingly jumped aboard surrounded by Arabs.

The bus pulled away and did not stop again until it reached the native village (it's last stop) I got off along with the other passengers and started walking towards the Camp, which was only a short distance further on. I became aware of someone following me (the hairs on the back of my neck bristled indicating trouble) and in front of me I noticed another figure was slowing down his pace, in those few transitory seconds I recalled someone telling me that just a short while ago an airman had been attacked in this village losing his money and pay book. I was not very happy with this state of affairs and prepared for the worst.

I admit shamelessly I sent a prayer up and now I swear it was answered because almost immediately, I heard the clip clop of a horse it was an ‘Arabia’ (like a Hansom Cab) and as it came alongside me I took one leap into it.

There were two Mauritius Army bod’s inside they went ‘white eyed’ and to this day I don't know if it was in amazement or fright but at that time it was of no consequence I apologised but I doubt if they understood me. I told the driver of the Arabia to stop when it got to the Camp gates, which he did. The Mauritius chaps will never know they were subjects of an answered prayer.

Needless to say my future trips to Benghazi at night were well vetted and getting absolute proof of transport availability was on top of my agenda. I must say most of the locals were ok; I used to get on reasonably well with them but as in most societies there are always the odd bad apples.

The first time I lent backwards on the top of a cliff I was about to abseil, it was the most frightened I have ever been and literally scared me rigid for sometime. Once I was able to conquer the fear it was awesome.

Now, jobless for six months. Gone to about 11 interviews and no job. If it weren't for my parents I would be living in the streets. No I'm not an alcoholic or a drug addict and I'm college educated. Its just these companies that want to hire loyal sheeps only and everyone else need not apply. *sigh*

When I was in the principal's office. Because she had a really big wooden spoon that she used to hit us with.

Then one day it broke and I laughed. Unfortunately, it hurt even more with tape wrapped around it.
