My painted turtle was at the bottom of her water area in her tank. She slowed down her eating and then I noticed over the next few days she had her eyes closed and was just chilling at the bottom. Now unfortunately I noticed she started floating up a bit. I think shes passed on but I don't want to bury her if theres a chance shes still alive. Please help if you have any information.

I know it sounds odd, but poke it in the butt.

If the conditions are cold, she is probably hibernating.

If the conditions are warm, your turtle may have passed away.

Conditions of below 60 degrees will induce hiberation at this time of year.

Above 60, your turtle will sleep, but should awaken when you prod or touch her.

Good luck, I hope she is alive.

Hibernating turtles still feel heavy and 'alive'. If you pull out a limb, it will resist you and pull it back.

Dead turtles float a little, are either 'locked' or limp, feel light.

It sounds dead- sorry!
