I think you are refering to "The Day After". It was a made for TV movie with Jason Robards in the lead role as a doctor in Lawrence, Kansas, after a brief but devastating nuclear exchange with the soviet union.

Funny but I just saw part of it on tv again very recently.

I remember it was devastatingly shocking when I first saw it. Very realistic. People going about everyday life with news reports about escalating tensions politically (I forget what was forcing it) and then they suddenly see ICBM launching from the farmlands surrounding them, and then mushroom clouds in the distance. It focuses on people who weren't directly hit, but they immediately start getting influx of blast victims and getting radiation sickness. People panicking over food and supplies. Hospitals overloaded. People slowing getting sick and dying.

Very well done movie and scary as hell because it was so realistic.

It's available from netflix in the us. I don't know about the uk.

I also remember seeing a movie in school back in the 70s which was made in the UK about the affects of a nuclear attack. It was a documentary rather than a dramatization. It might have been called "War Games" but I'm not sure.

I don't know where you can get a copy but I remember seeing that movie when it came out and it was pretty creepy (for a movie made in the 80's). You can read all about it here:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0085404/

I just read the book "The Road" by Cormac Mccarthy, which is a story taking place about 8 years after a nuclear war. very good, and quite depressing at the same time.

Your mates think wrong, cuz you're NOT making it up!

"In 1983, it was television that picked up the ball, with a series of made-for-TV films addressing a wide variety of issues in the context of movies about nuclear war. 1983 gave us Nicholas Meyer's The Day After, a film considered risky and disturbing by the networks. They went on a campaign of warning ("do not watch this alone...") that of course built up a huge audience, and had a calming post-game panel show featuring, I kid you not, Henry Kissinger, Dr. Strangelove himself."

That was a great film...I'm sure it scared everyone when they first aired it on television. It was especially gross the way the show the people dying and you can see their skeletons. As for how to get it, I know Netflix.com has it if you use that service. Otherwise, check out Amazon.com

That movie scared the stuffing out of me. Especially the fact that the human population had been so vastly reduced and the dang bugs seemed to have been thriving. As for searching for it, try ebay or amazon. good luck to you.
