If they're that young I think it depends on if they need it. If they're far away and need it for emergencies then yes. But they shouldn't have one just for the sake of having it. But do what you want. I've seen litlle kids in second grade with them. But personally I think five is too young to get a cell phone. And I personally think ten is a little young too. Wait til they're about 12 or 13.

I was at Middle School when they first started taking over the world so I was around (9-11 ish) and I think that was far too early for children to have one .... unless they need it for emergencies I suggest they wait til about 13 years old.

My rule is that when a child is old enough to either play a complete game of Monopoly, or set the timer on a VCR, then they can have a cell phone.

my 7 year old daughter wanted one for christmas and i refused. why make her grow up faster than she needs to?!!
i told her at the age of 12 i would think about it-it's around this age that girls like to hang out with their friends-go to the mall, watch a movie, go to friend's houses, etc.
it would be nice once she starts doing those things to have a way to contact her and for her to be able to contact me in the event of an emergency (needs a ride home for example) and most cell phone carriers nowdays have special phones designed for kids that mom and dad can restrict who they call and can even lock in how many mintues can be used each month....

I would say that children shouldn't have them until they are about 13, and even then, they should not be allowed to go crazy with it. They could have it for safety, emergencies, to check in with their parents, and to make quick calls. Also, if they have one, they should have it turned on at all times so that their parents can get ahold of them if they need to.

Ten? Really? TEN? Sheesh. How about giving them fifty cents for the pay phone? Not responsible enough at ten. I didn't get one till I was 58. I know that is really old but, TEN? That's asking for trouble. I don't think a kid should get one till they can legally drive and have a job to help pay for it.

If they are old enough to have a job, then they should be old enough to have a cell phone. I don't understand why elementary school children need cell phones. For what? It doesn't make sense to me.

My opinion -my daughter got hers when she went to Jr High - for emergency use only - to call me if necessary. It has come in handy - and she uses it only for emergencies. I personally think that kids don't need cell phones - unless the parents are using them as leashes for their kids.
My son will be going into jr high next year. Then he too will get one of his own - for emergency use only.

I can't think of a single reason why a child that young would need a cell phone. I think it is more appropriate when they become teenagers to let them have one for safety reasons.

5 yr olds are not responsible, personally I feel neither are 10 yr olds.... about 13 or 14 would be a better age...
