Yesterday I was wearing a green patterned skirt over a blue striped capree and someone said "When I was little we were told never to wear stripes and patterns together" and I was wondering if this is still true or now it is false? Personally I thought they looked pretty good together....

I like the idea of mixing patterns if some of the elements of the fabrics match.
For instance if I wore blue and white striped capris under the skirt, I'd make sure white or that blue was somewhere in the skirt.
And you definitely don't want a incredibly busy pattern over the capris. That's just too much pattern all and all.
Subtle is key when matching patterns.
My favorite is polka dots and stripes next to eachother. Wouldn't give it up even if it was a fashion "no-no"

If one of the patterns is very subtle, you can mix patterns. The key is to never mix more than one bold pattern with another. The more subtle pattern to your skirt or capri can serve as the "neutral" to your outfit, and then you can add a more bold pattern to that.
