I think the smell in NYC that everyone is complaining about was just a wave of fresh air. The people in that city are just so used to living in their own filth that they get repulsed at the idea of clean air.
It would be like San Francisco seeing a blue sky one morning, instead of the yellow smog. There would be news reports that the sky over San Francisco "turned a strange color"

SF is foggy, not smoggy, LA has smog. You may be correct about New York. Perhaps a chemical factory across the river in Newark shut down for an office party and didn't tell anyone.

When my daughter was small and we would go up to a country area {Live 15 miles west of NYC in NJ] she would always comment that the air smelled funny. I would just laugh and comment that it was just fresh air. Visiting a friend in a rural area my daughter came running into the house yelling the air smelled bad. Again I was laughing at our lack of similarity with fresh air. Well she grabbed me by the hand and dragged me outside. Whew was she right they were fertilizing and dropping manure from small planes.

LOL That is funny but unfortunately could be true.
I lived near Rochester, NY for many years and the sun was an interesting phenomenon because we didn't see it much.
