I`m Canadian and the best drama I`ve ever seen was Prime Suspect. British dramas are excellent.

Is there a British equivalent of Baltimore? Part of the reason that the show is amazing is because the writers are so true to Baltimore as a city and as a culture, and so true to the reality of the drug game, the cops, and the politics. They do a good job showing how life is not black and white but varying shades of gray.

If you've ever read Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets (on which the TV series is based) you'll get a feel for where the style comes from. It was written by David Simon (who writes The Wire along with Ed Burns). Simon has an amazing ability to observe, reflect, and expose without completely corrupting the subject matter (like so many writers, producers, and other "industry" people tend to do.)

It think its really cool that people across the pond appreciate the show!

I agree, I have all seasons of 24, Alias, x files, desperate housewives etc. But they also have a bad habit of starting series and just chopping them with no resolution, ie: American Gothic, Tru callin. Thats very annoying!
