White represents clealiness and purity. Black tends to represent bad and evil. That is the way movies have protrayed it. The bad guy always wore the black hat. This perception is not racial so don't go there. As for the actual colors themselves, some things look good in white which goes with everything. Some things look good in black. It becomes an individual preference.

In terms of skin (and the social problem you are researching), it is learned and can be unlearned.

However, in terms of itself, it is actually quite natural. It probably comes from our fear of night and the unknown and the dangers that night can bring from our earliest days. Hence, words like "bright" and "sunny" and "illuminate" are all incredibly positive well beyond their literal meanings. Likewise, "white" has come to mean, in Western Civilization, "pure," "clean," "good" because in nature things like snow and clouds seems to have those qualities.

However, using these attributes to explain or justify any kind of prejudice is merely the propaganda of those in power wanting to keep power.

Even though it's a pretty heavy subject, you can try "semiotics," the science of symbols and visual stimuli. Or, just try a psychology website. Or, better yet, check out the bibliography of the book you mention. (Or see if Amazon has other books that are like that book. If you type in, "The Bluest Eye," they'll probably come up with "other books that you would like."

Have you read about Kenneth Clark's famous experiment with dolls and children? If not, perhaps your answer is there.

its socialized... if i have to spell it out- its been learned and passed down over time. there's nothing "natural" about it.
