Don't panic, its the Windows Validation Tool which has failed. You can get support from either PC World or Microsoft. The tool fails about 17% of the time so you're not alone; you bought the pc from a major retailer so of course its valid!
You can try visiting the Microsoft site to have another go at validating it yourself.

There is a windows update called genuine windows notification which recognizes pirate XP installations. Once this update is installed it will check your XP installation and notify you if the copy is genuine. If not you will gat that annoying pop-up before you start up.
The only way to get rid is to purchase a genuine validation code from microsoft, or format your hard drive and re-install windows, but remember not to install the genuine windows notification update.
However, you need that update installed before you can install the new microsoft software like IE7 and the new spyware remover.
If you got your PC from PC world then you should not get this annoying problem and I would play **** with them to give you a genuine copy. Then try and get some freebies, which would be nice.

this is very worrying when companys like pc-world are shipping dodgy windows xp instalations
however i cant see that i.e 7 can be blamed for this,as its the wga tool(windows genuine advantage) that detects a pirated copy of xp
my advice is first contact pc-world and play hell with them for giving you a p.c with counterfeit windows on it and demand a new genuine copy or you will go to trading standards in your area
what they have done is disgusting, its not like they cant afford to use genuine copys
withregards to internet explorer 7 leave it on,as from personal experience uninstalling it will cause more damage than leaving it on,one such problem is the inability to attach files in yahoo e-mail
but contact pc-world a.s.a.p and sort out the xp problem, you really should be given a new copy at the store,if i were you i would demand a copy
good luck

PC world & microsoft will both try to help You.
Apart from that here:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/04/26/disable-and-remove-windows-genuine-advantage-notifications-nag-screen/comment-page-6/
You will find info how to deal with the nagging screen also.
mircrosoft does not want to nagg ppl but wants to get merchants that sell conterfeit xp cd. They will give You a key when a merchant sold You a fake cd.
IE 7 is no good browser anyway - maybe revert to IE 6?
Or get a alternative browser. They have more features.
& If it bothers You that Firefox starts slow try Opera or K-Meleon.

I would call the store and find out what is going on. I have IE7 and haven't had any problems with it. Check for a sticker on your tower that would have the Product Key on it. If there isn't one, then you should get ahold of PC World and find out why. You will need that later if something should happen to your computer and you need to redo everything.

look on the case for a sticker that is all hologramy (new word made up)
if you have that, you have a genuine copy of windows. if this carries on, either phone up[ microsoft and let them know, they are very good at this kind of thing. or go to pc world and use their phone bill.
hope you get it working
