As the sun get lower on the horizon sunlight passes through more of the atmosphere. The red color is due to the dust in the air.

The Sun and sky appear red at sunset due to the same phenomenon that makes the sky blue and the Sun yellow during the day: atmospheric scattering. At sunrise and sunset, the Sun sits low on the horizon instead of directly overhead, and its light must travel a further distance through the Earth's atmosphere. This results in blue light being scattered too sparesely to see, and red light being scattered by dust particles and soot, just the right amount to be seen very well (Mie theory). During the day, in more direct light, blue and violet light are scattered effectively enough, by gaseous atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, to be seen (Rayleigh scattering), but the eye is better at seeing blue light, so the sky looks blue due to the diffuse light of the Sun; the more direct sunlight appears yellow. Other colors are barely scattered at all, and at least some scattering is required before a color can be seen.

The sun light is traveing trough more atmosphere. When it shines through a larger piece of the atmosphere it is not as bright. The dust in the atmosphere causes it to turn red, and also reduces its aparent bringhtness.

the sun appears red due to the light being filtered by the earths ozone layer and other pollutants in the atmosphere.

Its caused by water vapor and pollutants. If you take a couple of teaspoons of milk and put it in a glass of water and then shine a flashlight through it it will be pinkish or redish.

the sun is actually aways red, but when it goes down it we see it red because the sky goes darker, as the earth spins.
