Server 2003 Unleashed is a good supplement, as well as a good QUE or UNLEASED Book on Win XP. Both these books have a lot about networking, and enough about TCPIP to help you set up networks optimally.

I would have to say the the prerequisite for that would be basic PC configuration/installation. you should be able to put a bare PC together from parts and load the OS in 3 hours or less and have it connected to a LAN.

then you are ready to start networking computers together...

No one can truely know all about Computer Networking. As we speak there is new technology and new protocals for that technology. But if you are really serious about this than try looking up Comptia.
