8 ga stainless measures .164" whereas 16 GA stainless is .060". The density Lbs./in.³ is .286 for 300 series stainless and .283 for 400 series.
The lower the guage, the THICKER the sheet is. So, obviously, the same area of material would be heavier if it were 8 GA, but it would have the same density as any other stainless steel guage.

Norma, the higher the number in your steel the less quality it will be. Especially in your metal buildings, a good grade of steel for a strong building is no less than 28 guage.
