Most animals communicate by body movement. Some of the larger animals communicate by sound waves; whales, dolphins sharks, elephants. Bats comunicate by echo-location.

There was a show on elephants one time. And they said that elephants communicate in AT LEAST 7 different waves that people can hear. They use other vibrations that only other animals can hear. Just like sound waves and earth vibrations; earthquakes, storms, and other really bad things.

Remember the tsunami over in Thailand, I think it was, about 4 years ago? They couldn't find any animals where the water landed. Why? Because they all felt the vibrations from the land under the water changing, and they took to higher ground. They knew something was coming, and they knew they had to get away from it.

Animals also pick up on energy released from other animals, and humans. If an animal seems to interested in something, other animals become interested as well. When you're irritated or upset, what does you pet do? It comes up to you and tries to make you feel better. When you're angry, you dog becomes afraid. When you're happy or hyper, your dog becomes playful and excited. Energy is more then just electricity, and something that little kids have.

Human communication is totally verbal and eye contact. If you look at someone with "come hither" eyes, then they'll take that as flirting. Or if you use a soft voice, or light giggles, they can take that as flirting. If you use a harsh voice, or a loud voice, they can take that as anger or irritation. And then there's not most obvious; the words we use.

If you stand close to someone, moving your body loosely, they'll take that as flirting. If you stand still, and very tense, they'll take that as anger. Human body language, and animal body language aren't really different. The only difference is how it's percieved. You could mean one thing, and someone will take it the opposite way. With animals, how it's given, is how it's percieved. Because of the energy they're releasing.

Animals have certain sounds for different things. Watch the animal Planet some time. Watch the shows about wild animals. You'll learn alot about body language, communication, territory, and so on.

Animals do communicate and the way that they communicate is not that much different from the way humans communicate. Animals do not need extensive language capacity that humans have that enable us study and learn about everything under the sun. Their vocabulary requirements for comprehension are about on the level of a two year old child. For example a cat will rub against your leg when it wants attention, sit by the door when it wants to go out , and meow when it wants to be feed, and come to you when it wants you to pet it. Wild animals also communicate about food, territory, and members of the herd or group. Animals communicate by a complex combination of body language and vocalizations.

I think it is unknown exactly how animals communicate, body language certainly plays a major part but Killer Whales have different dialects depending on what pod they belong to. Dolphins may have some advanced form of communication. Many primates have specific calls or noises for specific situations. I think we have barely begun to scratch the surface of animal intelligence.

A lot of the same ways as humans - vocally, body movements, scents, facial expressions, etc. Just done in their own language.

They usually communicate for food, and stuff like that. Body language. They don't have a meta-language (they can't talk about their own language - like we are doing now).

If dogs could talk they would call you Mom or Dad. If cats could talk they would call you by your first name. LOL I'm sorry to give a funny instead of intelligent answer but comic relief is ok too.
