I'm using the Tums to supply my body with calcium and the pepto every once in a while for upset stomach. This should be alright, right?

I have the "Mother of all Pregnancy Books" by Ann Douglas, book was recommended by my doctor.
It says that Bismuth Subsalicylate which is in Pepto should only be taken the first five month of pregnancy and not to exceed the recommended dosages.
It also states that Simethicone which is in Tums, that there is a possible association with cardiovascular birth defects, but cause and effect in not likely.

My doctor ordered me 3 Tums in the morning and 3 Tums at night. Never had a day of indigestion and they are a great calcium supplement. He is a high risk specialist so he knows what he is talking about. Don't know about Pepto though. Good luck!

Tums are okay and even recommended by some doctors for the calcium but Pepto-bismol contains aspirin which is not okay to have during pregnancy or breastfeeding (also don't give it to a child under 19 if there is a fever).

edit to correct:
it contains a salicylate which is the family of meds of which aspirin is a part. Check with your ob anyway but mine told me to stay away from it (so did my pedi when I began to breastfeed).

Yes, but don't use tum's for calcium, use a calcium supplement such as caltrate (it is over the counter). They have a chewable version that tastes likes sweet tarts that I actually liked taking. Should (according to my Dr) get an extra 1200 calcium while pregnant in addition to you prenatal vitamin.
Congrats!

Tums are fine. I am not too sure about the Pepto. You may want to ask on that one.

You should not take any over the counter meds without your Doctors approval if you can not talk with the doctor call your hospital ask for labor and delivery then speak to a nurse and ask her. the calcium you need should come from your prenatal vitamins BUT ask your doctor again to be sure.

i would not use tums for calcium. just try to drink milk if you can and if not they make oj with calcium in it too. tums are fine when you are pregnant for heart burn. but i would not take too many all the time.
