Does anyone have any good, unusual ideas for a fancy dress?

If you're a guy, once cool thing to do would be wearing a t-shirt with some quirky saying or design on front with a button-down, crisp white shirt underneath with a nice blazer over it, and designer or very nice-looking jeans. A paperboy hat would top the look. Also, I think Kanye West and many guys in hip hop have some unusual ideas that they sport at award shows and public appearance. I would fancy that if you did a search on any of the following names - Kanye West, Andre 3000 (from Outkast), Pharrell - you'd find some inspiration.
If you're a female, what a lot of women are doing these days are wearing booties with formal dresses and wearing their hair "less fancy and formal" (think ponytail) instead of some fancy up-do. Also, a leather, cropped jacket with a fancy dress is another good, "unusual" idea for things.

black or white high heels

black/red/blue leotard
bunny ears and cuffs
have fun and enjoy the party

If you are Male you could go as Dafyd 'the only gay in the village' if you are female you could go as a sumo wrestler or vice versa
