I am looking to go travelling round europe for a few months, I want to see as many areas as I can fit in (whilst still getting to experience places properly). If I were to get a rail pass I would probably get the 1 or 2 zones one and then choose another 1 or 2 zones when it expires. I'm going to play it by ear, but will probably be moving on every couple of days. Just wondering whether an all-inclusive rail pass is likely to be my best bet or whether I should just buy tickets for the individual journeys. (I'm under 26)

If you know you are going to be traveling a lot, definitely buy the rail pass because it will save you a lot of money, especially if you don't want to set your travel plans in stone at the start. Buying last-minute tickets can be really expensive, but if you buy at least 2 weeks in advance you can often get good deals from the rail companies.

Regional travel passes are often a great deal if you can work one area at a time that might save more money.

I love the DB passes like the bayern pass that lets you go all over bavaria for one day (about 30e for up to 5 traveling together I think). If you stay in munich that can get you to the castles one day. Another day to salzburg, another day to rothenburg. they have them for all diffent regions of germany.

Also found a similar deal on weekend passes in the benulux contries last year very cheap for small groups - even a deal for one person compared to full fare rail

I have a similar problem in that I'm trying to determine whether a eurail selectpass will actually save me money. I'd wanted to take a hotel train from Barcelona to Zurich or Milan, but I discovered that it is not much of a bargain on the hotel trains if you want a cabin with sleeping berths. If you're going 2nd class on a youthpass and you don't need a sleeping berth or separate cabin, your eurail pass should make most of your travel free or low cost. Be aware that you do need reservations on certain trains. But yes, I would get a eurail youthpass if I were you.
