how is the best way to de-scale a steam iron? all these gritty bits keep coming out just when you are about to iron something decent

Cheapest way, fill iron with 50/50 vinegar and water solution, heat iron, iron using full steam onto a rag. This lossens most deposits and cleans the iron. After doing this, flush out the solution and fill with clean water.

Fill it with white vinigar and let it set for at least 15 minutes, dump it out and if it is not clean, do it again, you can use the same vinegar. After doing this put some distilled water in it. and let it steam for a minute. Should be clean.

CLR (This is the name of a product. It's in the cleaning supplies aisle.)
Then use distilled water in it from now on.

vinegar is a great cleaning agent...once you get it cleaned out, I would not use tap water anymore, but use distilled water.

You can try vinegar. That's what I use in coffee pots. very inexpensive.
