back when karheem and magic used these there hadnt been a defense developed yet but as time passed also there are a greater percentage of players able to slam dunk the game is constantly evolving so the shot and defenses and even players must also do so

The one big man who still uses the jump shot is Rasho Nesterovic for the Raptors, he will never dunk the ball. Come to think of it most big men that use the hook/jump shot are European product. The North American game is more physical believing in pounding the ball inside and going up for a dunk or layup.

I think it's still a valuable shot, it's just that it takes so much time and patience to learn that players would rather use the normal jump shot instead. It seems like the learning curve on the jump hook is quite high, and takes ALOT of time and practice before it can really be used by players with some reliability..

I think it is mainly b/c big men in today's game do not take time to actually develop a "game". With the exception of Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett most forwards and centers rely on just raw athleticism like an Amare Stoudamire or just raw power like Shaq. They become content with themselves and never become what they are truly capable of. Shaq is a a 14 year veteran who still can't make a free throw.

Its not as accurate as the high percentage shots that inside guys are taught to do. They now try to back their guy all the way under the hoop then just turn around and lay it in. Also, hooks get blocked really easy from behind

i've seen Tim Duncan do a variation of the sky hook at various points in his career. i jus dont think thats a shot players work on anymore, they work on their posting up and dunking more than their sky hooks and such.

I think alot of players think its uncool. except for I would argue that some fundamental based players still do.
I know for a fact that Shaq does from time to time.
I wouldnt put my life on it, but Im pretty sure Ive seen Yao and Tim Duncan use it from time to time.
but most players dont because dunks are higher percentage and they are flashier.

According to Walt Frazier and his book, The Game within The Game, he says that there are no real centers in the league today, other than Shaq. He also says its uncool to use it anymore.

Players today are not skilled enough to use the sky hook.
It was an unstoppable move perfected by an unstoppable player.
Kareem.
