I just my tongue pierced a week ago and my tongue is fine, however, manuvering food around the tongue ring is an impossible chore for me. So i simply remove the bar momentarily until i am finished eating, rinse with antiseptic and replace bar. Mind you this is extremely brief, merely minutes at a time. Is this really that bad? There is no pain or discomfort during removal and my tongue never really swelled. Any advice? Does anyone else do or has done this?

it's not that big of a thing. i pierced my own tongue over 5 years ago...not advised unless you really know what you're doing...i removed it a lot, changed bar lengths, etc., it could possibly prolong the healing process, but not by much since you're not having pain or swelling. continue to use antiseptic and you should be fine. if you continue to have difficulty maneuvering food, you probably need a shorter barbell.
EDITS: my barbell is threaded, and is a 12 gauge.

I've had my tongue pierced since 2000. I never take mine out (except for when I'm changing barbells). It's really not a good idea to take it out until it heals completely (and it probably has not). If it's the orig. barbell that they pierced you with, it's probably just too long for you. You might want to try an 18 gauge barbell that's a bit shorter for you. That way it won't be moving around so much while you are trying to eat.

(just a tip: make sure your barbells are surgical steel and aren't threaded)

Good luck! :)

it takes 4 - 6 weeks for your tongue to heal and you should follow directions for care. particularly since you are touching your bar with your hands then inserting the bar into an open wound.

this site is quite specific about the care of your piercing

a good number of soup. after I were given mine pierced years in the past I so keep in thoughts the feeling. It takes awhile to get used to yet contained in the intervening time because its sore and swelled, soup is the answer.

i am no expert but to me your tongue just got pierced so that means it is a wound that is trying to heal its self closed. to me i dont think it is a good idea even if it is only for a few minutes.
