I've recently signed up to go back to school to become an elementary school teacher with a middle school endorsement. It will be a career change for me, and I'm nervous that I'm not doing the right thing.

Lately I've noticed that when I'm around kids in certain situations, I get very cranky. Children running around a restaurant, or kids playing in the hot tub at a hotel, or yelling and whining in movie theathers and stores.

To teachers, do you think that my reactions to children in the above situations indicates that I'm not cut out to be a teacher?

Not at all. I have the same reaction to those situations you have described. It is not really a reaction to the children themselves, more to their behaviour! Your reaction shows that you will be a good teacher. You will probably be fairly hot on disciplin, which every kid will learn to respect you for. Kids hate teachers that cannot control them or who dont care if they race around the classroom like lunatics. I was very strict with my classroom management but all the kids highly respected me for it. They used to take the mic out of the teachers who 'didnt care'.

Goodluck going back into teaching! It is a very rewarding job.

Your reactions are perfectly normal and actually indicate to me that you would be a good teacher. I got my degree to teach, but it wasn't until I did the student teaching that I realized this wasn't really something I wanted to do the rest of my life. I would recommend you asking a school if you may volunteer in a classroom (they'll usually find a use for you, I did it for years) so you can get an idea of what you will be doing, what age groups/grades you'll do best with, and if you really want to continue in that direction with your career.

I suggest you spend a great deal of time subbing in classrooms for ages you are considering teaching. Some people are very well qualified, but cannot maintain control in a classroom and actually educate the children. Then, there are the very rough around the edges people that can discipline and teach. You need experience to see.

NOT AT ALL!! In fact, there is a joke about how that is a sign that you ARE a teacher! In your room, you will be able to make and enforce your rules and not have to put up with this (except on the playground and in the hallways!).

Good luck!!!
