Well...technically a pregnancy is 10 lunar months from start to finish - the due date, anyway. It could be possible that her dates were wrong, or that she just went over due. In the days before precise dating and ultrasound and crazy over the top interventions, some doctors would let you go until you were done baking - I've heard of some women going three weeks late. The risk of this, though, is the baby can swallow meconium (poop, basically) that happens when the baby is too mature in the womb and has his first poop. Since you said the baby was born in Haiti, I'm sure it means that she had fewer pregnancy interventions than are typical in the US, where they want to poke and prod you for everything.

I did some poking around online about "44 week pregnancy", which would be 11 months, and here's some stuff I found, the story of at least one woman (in North America, no less) who gave birth after 44 weeks. No wonder she gave birth at home.

Here in the USA the doctors won't let a woman carry a baby more than 10 months without doing an C-section or inducing. There's something about infection or risks to carrying a baby too long.

I could happen, but more likely because she didnt see a doctor she wasnt pregnant in the begining when she thought she was, but simply skipped a period or two before actually conceiving.

A usual pregnacy is between 38 and 42 weeks.
