hey, when did they bark???? i didn't hear that. i think i'll go to a doc and have him my ears checked!!!!!
they don't "bark", but that sound that they produce from their mouth is called bark.

stimuli
when something excites their instinctual stimuli they react barking. thats the psychobiology view.
They bark at a stranger because they think the stranger is coming to inconvenience or rob the BIG smart dog of bones. Ever known that your dog sees you as a smarter dog but a dog all the same! Thats the existentialist view

Dogs get a strange feeling about something, like if your sitting their and you dog start to bark than something is not right, if your doing something and you and ur dog is in other rooms and you dog come and jump on you, thats a sign of telling you something is wrong, trust me I have 2 pitbulls.

To connect with other dogs. To express their feelings, to discourage someone or sth who or what makes them feel unsafe or just for barking ;P

I don't know what this has to do with philosophy but I think they bark when they want attention.

dogs cant talk right? that's y they bark
it is their medium of communication.
but yes it is also said dogs do really howl coz they possess a unique ability to sense if a spirit is around them and is in pain or its a bad spirit.. perhaps that's why.
