I have recently had some problems with my Linksys router (at least I think it's the router), and to isolate the problem I wanted to bypass it and connect my motorola sb5100 directly to my pc... Strange enough, I can't seem to be able to figure out how to connect it properly. I just cannot get a connection. It is frustrating because it should be simple, I bet I am just making a silly mistake..I know it's hard to explain something like that in writing, so I am looking for instructions along the lines of: 'plug the cable that normally connects your modem to the router between your pc and modem' etc...

Can anybody help?

kruelen, I tried what you said, but am still not getting a connection (the 4 modem lights are on). Could it be related to TCP/IP settings?

if your going to bypass the router than you need to make sure you connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer. than you need to reset your modem. Unplug the modems power from at least 15-30 seconds. Make sure you have at least 4 solid lights on the modem, if not than your not getting connection from you service provider, call them. If you do then you need to restart your computer. Once the computer is back up, check for internet. If you dont get access than you might have a static connection. I will update if you can give info on what windows your running or if your even running windows.

EDIT: You should be able to get online if you have 4 solid lights - in that case it might not be the router, but setting on the computer

In Windows XP, check to see if its static first. Click on Start > Control Panel, click on Network and Internet Connection > then at the bottom click on Network Connections (if in Classic View click on Network Connections) - you then want to right click on Local Area Connection and select properties. Make sure Internet Protocol TCP/IP is checked. Click once to highlight Internet Protocol without removing the check then click on Properties. Make sure both IP and DNS are both set to Obtain Automatically. You may need to restart you computer after that.

Also if you have a firewall, you may want to disable it to make sure thats not effecting the connection. If you still having problems, then next thing to check is to see if its just Internet Explorer. Start by clicking on Start > Run, type in CMD, click OK, within the Command Prompt (the black screen) type in "ping www.google.com" and then press Enter. If you get a reply then its Internet Explorer.
