The dictionary game is one of my favorites, the way we play it requires at least 4 people, but I found a link of a way to play it with only 2 or 3. I'll put both links down for you. :-) All you need to play it is paper, pencils and a dictionary.
Oh, I forgot about Kinds in the Corner, a card game you can play with a regular set of cards that is good for all ages. I put a link in for that game too, ok?

apples to apples is a really fun game, all my nieces and nephews love playing it when they visit, and the adults enjoy it, too...without buying anything, perhaps you have a deck of cards adn you can play some card games? chinese checkers, checkers, etc. these can all be picked up at garage sales relatively cheap...family night is a commendable endeavor and I hope it all goes well! have some cute snacks like finger foods, if you can...maybe baby carrots and ranch dip, kids get excited for finger foods..haha..at least that has been my experience entertaining my nieces. above all, keep it fun, with no worries over 'winning' :) you win by playing the game :)

UNO is a great family game. One of my favorites was monopoly but you have to make sure your 8 year old can comprehend buying/selling real estate and counting money. Sorry and Scattegories are also some great ones.
