So far in this process, when I plug the ipod into the usb cable the ipod displays the 'do not connect' message on the screen and stops playing music.

Do I need to get some other charging cable for the nano?

Please help.

yes u can get an AC/DC adapter which is not retailed by apple

in this charger, the Do Not Disconnect sign flashes only once and then u can listen to music

however, in the computer, the charging cable needs to perform a lot of functions, so listening to music would be an interruption

You can eject the ipod from itunes but not disconnect the ipod from the computer. This way it will charge and you can play all the music you want!
