In the metric system, all units are comprised of a base unit and prefixes. In the case of cm (or centi-metre) and mm (or milli-metre) the base unit is the meter and the prefixes denote what the relationship is to the base unit. Centi, like the word 1/100th of a dollar (cent) means 1/100, so a centimetre would be 1/100th of a metre. Milli, meaning 1000, is used to denote 1/1000th, so a millimetre would be 1/1000 of a metre. Thus, a centimetre is 10 times larger than a millimetre.
As a handy reference, here are some common prefixes:
pico- 1/10^12
nano- 1/10^9
micro- 1/10^6
milli- 1/1000
centi- 1/100
deci- 1/10
Decca- 10
hecto- 100
kilo- 1000
Mega- 10^6
Giga- 10^9
Terra- 10^12
