Can someone possibly explain to me how the current test rankings are worked out? England ranked 2nd in the world, I should coco. Is this based on them beating Austrailia back in 2005?

The rankings for teams and individuals in Test and ODI cricket are worked out on a points system. Points are allocated, and are weighted by things such as opposition and venue. Points are given for match victories, series victories and tournament victories, though the last one hasnt done too much, as Australia winning the Champions Trophy has not extended their lead over South Africa.

England beating Australia did give them a boost up the rankings, as they beat the 1st ranked team their points had extra weighting. They had built up a good tally in the 18 months prior to the 2005 Ashes - after all they did not lose a test in 2004.

It's based on performances over the last however-long. England are kinda de facto 2nd, as they beat Pakistan in 2006 and drew in India in 2005/6. No other team comes close to these three behind Australia, WI are crap, SA in freefall (but good enough to beat India at home, further undermining India's claim for 2nd place), NZ and SL don't play enough to be serious contenders. If India win in England this summer they may well be 'officially' 2nd, but I would expect England to win both summer series fairly comfortably. The gap between Australia and the rest though is huge, Aus are the only team in the world who would start an away series favourites (except playing in Ban who don't count)

No cricket rating are done on the curent performances only. Yes but if a team or player do not play for a particular period then there past performance is counted. Each and every ball is counted. The fall of wickets, average at which runs are scored, maiden overs balled are all counted. For a batsman his batting average is counted. I think England is ranked 2nd because even though they have lost the ashes series terribly by 5-0 they had played well and had fought till the end. Hence there average is not so bad.

Jeez, get over it, we really arent that bad. In the last few series we havebeat the world no 1, the then world no 2, and drawn with India (think they were 4th) on their own soil. Not so bad really. Admittedly we did just take a pummeling which will probably put us back down to 3 below Pakistan. But cheer up, we really arent that bad.

Maybe it is, but I think also it's based on consistency and how many matches they win. What's "I should coco?"
